Four arrested with 783 cell phones

Four Sri Lankans returning to the nation about a flight from Dubai were arrested by Katunayake Airport Customs past for trying to smuggle inside 783 cell phones and a consignment of accessories valued at about Rs.3.1 million.

Customs Spokesman Lesley Gamini mentioned the stock confiscated by the Customs included 783 cell phones of different types, 560 batteries, 1,100 chargers plus 700 additional connected accessories.

According to Gamini, approval within the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) and a declaration to the Customs plus payment of relevant import duty plus taxes is required whenever delivering inside a big stock of cell phones plus accessories into the nation.

In addition to denying import duty plus taxes money, smuggling of several telephone accessories plus specifically satellite phones may moreover pose protection implications, he added.
